-but ends up defeated, fuckton of freed slaves leave for Africa though


-in 1825, French troops invade Salvador again in support of mixed-race revolt

-in 1829, Portugal comes to peace, reluctantly giving independence to Bahia

-slavery everywhere else devastated by escape, forcing Portugal to import brand new slaves

-another massive flow of freed slaves to Africa

-but nevertheless, creating a sort of creole republic

-almost exclusively centered around Salvador and surrounding Recôncavo

-directorial government with directors representing number of ethnicities, races

-Bahia forms various links

-diamond mining begins


-with French Wars > Third French War (1847-1854), in 1851 Portugal invades Bahia during height of Meridian War of Independence, occupies Salvador

-ends up with French troops invading Bahia in 1854, defeating them

-Bahia resurrected

-Bahia able to break away from being vassal of France by playing it off with Meridia
